More and more people are owning a laptop. Yet, fewer of those individuals are springing for the extended warranty options that are offered with so many laptops. Warranties will vary by company, but there are some good reasons to purchase the extended warranty.

The first reason is one that you are probably familiar with. Laptops are expensive. Yeah, they are not as expensive as they were when they first hit the market, but you still don’t want to go around buying a new one anytime soon if you don’t have to. The cost of the extended warranty is less than the cost of a new laptop, much less. This is true even if you got a cheap laptop, even a laptop for under $500.

Laptops are also put into risky situations every single day. The very nature of a laptop is portability. One bad fall, and you laptop could be done. Not to mention the risk associated with everyday activities, like drinking a glass of water near your laptop. One good spill, and that laptop is fried. Standard warranties won’t cover accidents, but extended warranties may.

Also, laptops are much more prone to theft than desktop computers. If you put your laptop case down, it looks totally normal for someone else to walk away with it, without you even noticing. Someone walking out of your house with a big computer monitor and tower looks a little less natural.

Not all extended warranties will cover all potential hazards to your laptop, so it is good to read the fine print. Of course, people go without extended warranties without a problem all of the time, but it is a risk. Calculate the risk and what you are willing to pay. Be sure to read the fine print carefully. If you are a total klutz, and extended warranty may not cover accidents that are your fault.
