While “The White Noise Machine” may sound like the latest horror movie to hit the theaters, it’s actually something that does the opposite of scare or frighten you! In fact, white noise is something that can be used to alleviate stress and help a persons mind relax. Because of this, the use of white noise technology is very common as part of sound and light machines and other sleep technology devices.

What does white noise sound like? It’s hard to describe, but to put it into words, I would say it’s something in between the sound of constant rushing water and the hum of big piece of hardware that never turns off, like a refrigerator or a big computer server that runs 365 days a year. In a way, it’s a kind of merging of natural and artificial sound.

Hearing this monotonous sound, the brain becomes habituated to it, and after a time, the conscious mind ceases to recognize it. This is good, as it is often at this point that a person has let go of holding onto any outside distractions and will soon ease themselves into the world of sleep.

A white noise machine is excellent at providing a healthy solution towards sleep problems that doesn’t involve pills or unbecoming side effects, such as sleep walking or even hallucinations, as some prescription sleep medication can. At the same time, it’s not a technology that’s going to hit you over the head and force you into sleep. It takes a meeting of both parties to use a white noise machine effectively as a sleep aid. You can think of it as an extension of sleep techniques that involve breath work or meditation. White noise machines can create a nice sound barrier to rest the mind on as you simultaneously slip away from the conscious aspect of the mind and into your dreams.
