Ultrabooks are the craze of the moment, and they sure deserve to be: they are thin, light and with a battery life compared to that of tablets or netbooks. Although there are a lot of ultrabooks on the market right now, two models have managed to rise up above the rest: the Acer Aspire S3 and the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s. The S3 is a budget ultrabook which manages to bring good performance at a smaller price, while the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s is more expensive but packs better hardware.
To start with, according to this Lenovo IdeaPad U300s review from TipsAvenue, this device is probably the best business-ready ultrabook you can get on the market. It comes with either a 13.3 inch screen with a 1366 x 768 resolution and either an Intel Core i5 CPU at 1.6GHz or an Intel Core i7 CPU at 1.7GHz. You’ll get in the package 4GB of RAM and Intel HD 3000 graphics and you can opt for a 128GB or a 256GB SSD.
As expected, the Acer Aspire S3 is similar in terms of performance with the U300s: you have a 13.3 inch laptop with the same resolution as the Lenovo, but you can only go for the Intel Core i5 processor with 4GB of RAM and Intel HD 3000 graphics card. Storage on the S3 is a hybrid, having a 20GB SSD for the OS and a 320GB HDD for storing your personal files and data. Overall it’s not a bad combination of components, but a little slower than the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s.
If we were to compare the two, the Acer S3 we are talking about here is a budget laptop costing only $850, but it lacks in certain areas such as the battery life or aluminum body. On the other hand, you can clearly see that the Lenovo U300s starts at $1.199 but offers much more in terms of protection and battery life, as well as a better keyboard and touchpad. Surely, the $450 price difference is huge for an average consumer, but it is well accounted for when we look at the specs of the U300s.
All in all, both the Acer Aspire S3 and the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s are amazing ultrabooks which have their place on the market. When they are put directly side-by-side you begin to see why one is more expensive than the other, but overall, if you would like to get an ultrabook just for multimedia and office then your best option is the Acer S3.
